Hole 18

A most spectacular setting and the hole for which the Palingbeek is rightly famous. Although a few brave souls have been known to go for the green from the tee, wiser players will aim to position their ball in the angle of the 90° dog-leg to the left (approx. 150-190 metres).

This leaves a downhill shot with a carry of 140-160 metres over water to reach the putting surface. The most common error on this hole is over-ambition: here it is important to be aware of the limitations of your golf game (unless you actually enjoy losing golf balls). In particular, short hitters and high handicappers are strongly advised to chip down to the water’s edge and play to be on the green in three.

Even when you are over the water, your difficulties are not at an end: the two tier green is one of the most difficult to read and to play – a fitting climax to what we hope will have been an enjoyable round of golf.
